Essie Swatches and Review: Smokin' Hot, Fifth Avenue, Dressed to The Nineties and Prime & Pop

**press samples**

Hi friends, welcome back! Today I have swatches of Essie nail polishes to share with you, which include the shades: Smokin' Hot, Fifth Avenue, Dressed to The Nineties and Prime & Pop. These colours were sent to me courtesy of Essie in exchange for my honest review.

I'm excited to start bringing a larger focus to mainstream brands on my blog. Some of you might be forming a confused facial expression and saying to yourself, "Will she not be reviewing indie brands anymore?" - I assure you I will still continue to showcase my beloved indie brands, not to worry!

Let's get onto the swatches!

Smokin' Hot (November 2017 Colour of the Month)

Smokin' Hot is described as a stone-cold fox grey nail lacquer.

My swatch shows Smoking' Hot applied in 2 easy coats, paired with 1 glossy coat of Essie Gel Couture top coat. I find the formula to be a fantasist consistency; not thick and not too funny - the perfect medium. Upon applying the 1st coat, it was a little shear and started thinking I might need 3 thin coats. In the end, it covered perfectly within 2 coats. I absolutely love this colour and think of it as quite unique. Great for Fall and Winter months! Of course don't feel limited in wearing this shade only during the colder months, as it would be perfect all year round! I personally lean more towards dark shades like this and I can definitely see myself wearing it anytime of the year!

Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is described as a stylish and creamy red orange blend lacquer.

My swatch shows Fifth Avenue applied in 2 easy coats, paired with 1 glossy coat of Essie Gel Couture top coat. The formula was easy to apply and was happy to have achieved full opacity within the second coat. Red's will never go out of style and will forever be such a classy shade! I do appreciate me a good red and typically lean more towards blue under toned reds versus this orange under toned red. It's gorgeous given the proper skin tone. It's vibrant, bold, classy and chic all at the same time!

Dressed to The Nineties

Dressed to the Nineties is described as a dark purple with a green-blue shimmer.

My swatch shows Dressed to The Nineties applied in 2 easy coats, paired with 1 glossy coat of Essie Gel Couture top coat. The formula was smooth, creamy and was able to easily reach full opacity within the 2 coats. This shade is absolutely stunning and love the green-blue shimmer shift! The shift is more prominent within the bottle versus whats translated onto the nails. The shift still shows on the nail but it's not as strong as what's seen in the bottle. Regardless, a very beautiful shade and something I can definitely see myself reaching for multiple times!

Prime & Pop

Prime & Pop is a white base coat nail polish, meant to be used underneath neon nail polishes.

My swatch of Prime & Pop is shown applied in 2 medium coats, paired with 1 glossy coat of Essie Gel Couture top coat. Prime & Pop is marketed to use as a base underneath neon nail polishes. Using a white base colour underneath neon nail polishes helps to amplify the vibrancy of the neon polish. Some neon polishes can be on the thinner side, requiring several coats. With the use of a white base underneath, you would only need 1-2 thin coats depending on application and of course the formula of the particular neon nail polish being used. In my swatch photo's I wore it on it's own as theres something really chic about white nail polish. This white shade is pretty vivid versus being a dulled out kind of white!

Overall, I really enjoyed the shades that were sent to me and I would have to say Dressed to The Nineties is my absolutely favourite! Second up would have to be Smoking' Hot - actually, it's a tie between those two for 1st place! Do you have a favourite Essie shade? If so, I'd love to hear your favourites down below!

  1. Hi, I enjoyed your review on these great Essie shades. I think I have to agree that dressed to the nineties would be my number one pick followed by a tie between Smokin Hot and Faith Avenue. I have Smokin Hot and I love it!! Great color great formula! What's the color of the month for December?? Thanks for the great review!
